వివరాల్లోకి వెళితే… కియోన్ఝర్ జిల్లాలోని దియానాలి గ్రామానికి చెందిన గిరిజనుడు జితు ముండా సోదరి కక్రా ముండా రెండు నెలల క్రితం మరణించింది. ఆమె భర్త, ఏకైక సంతానం కూడా ముందే చనిపోవడంతో జితు ఒక్కడే ఆమెకు దగ్గరి బంధువుగా మిగిలాడు. కక్రా పేరు మీద మల్లీపసిలోని ఒడిశా గ్రామీణ బ్యాంకులో ఖాతా ఉండగా, అందులో రూ.19,300 ఉన్నాయి.
ఆ డబ్బును తీసుకునేందుకు జితు బ్యాంకును ఆశ్రయించగా, మేనేజర్ నిబంధనల ప్రకారం అడ్డు చెప్పారు. ఖాతాదారు స్వయంగా రావాలని లేదా చట్టబద్ధమైన వారసత్వ పత్రాలు, మరణ ధ్రువీకరణ పత్రం సమర్పించాలని కోరారు. చదువుకోని నిరుపేద గిరిజనుడైన జితుకు ఆ పత్రాలు ఎలా పొందాలో తెలియలేదు. అధికారుల ప్రక్రియ అర్థం కాక నిస్సహాయతతో వెనుదిరిగాడు.

A heart-wrenching incident, one that defies the very essence of humanity and starkly illustrates how rigid regulations can toy with the life of a destitute individual, has unfolded in the Keonjhar district of Odisha. In a desperate attempt to withdraw Rs 19,300 from his deceased sister’s bank account, a man walked approximately three kilometers to the bank, carrying her skeleton on his shoulders. Locals who witnessed this harrowing sight were moved to tears.
According to the details of the incident: Kakra Munda, the sister of Jitu Munda—a tribal resident of Dianali village in the Keonjhar district—passed away two months ago. Since her husband and only child had also died previously, Jitu remained her sole surviving close relative. Kakra held a bank account in her name at the Odisha Gramya Bank in Mallipasi, which contained a balance of Rs 19,300.
When Jitu approached the bank to withdraw these funds, the manager refused his request, citing official regulations. The manager insisted that either the account holder appear in person—an impossibility—or that Jitu submit legal heirship documents and a death certificate. As an uneducated and impoverished tribal man, Jitu had no idea how to procure the required documents. Unable to comprehend the bureaucratic procedures, he turned back in utter helplessness.
With no other recourse, he went to the village burial ground on Monday. There, he dug up the spot where his sister had been interred, gathered her remains and skeleton, and wrapped them in a cloth. Under the scorching sun, he hoisted the bundle onto his shoulder and set off for the bank. Locals were left in shock upon seeing Jitu arrive at the bank carrying a human skeleton. While some wept, others expressed intense outrage over the conduct of the bank officials. “Is it really this difficult for a poor man to withdraw his own money?” they questioned. They fumed that the officials had prioritized mere paperwork over humanity, failing to conduct a proper inquiry involving the Sarpanch.
Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and calmed Jitu down. They assured him that they would resolve the issue with a humanitarian approach. The police further stated that they would seek an explanation from the bank regarding the incident.
